The Perfect California Road Trip: Scenic Routes, Food, and Unforgettable Moments
California was a spontaneous choice inspired by the need to explore and enjoy good food after a challenging year. Our travels are all about experiencing as much as we can—rarely staying in one place for long, always seeking new restaurants, hotels, cultures, and people. Our trip began in San Francisco, with a stop at the Golden Gate Vista, then continued down the Pacific Coast Highway to Newport Beach, with countless scenic stops along the way.
We kickstarted our journey in Napa at The Lodge at Sonoma Resort, Autograph Collection, using our Marriott Bonvoy points. That first evening, we explored downtown Napa’s Oxbow Public Market, an incredible spot for food lovers, packed with diverse local vendors and outdoor seating. The next day, we enjoyed brunch at Boon Fly Café, emphasizing the importance of talking to locals when traveling. Their recommendations helped us connect with authentic spots and truly immerse ourselves in the community.
The highlight was driving the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping at Vista Points and Bixby Bridge, capturing the stunning coastal scenery. Our stay at Mission Ranch in Carmel was a dream, cozy, historic, with spectacular sunsets and easy walks along Point Lobos. The staff and property made it feel like a home away from home, and the overall experience, despite some unexpected closures, became one of my favorites.
Traveling from Carmel to Ojai via the scenic Highway 1 was filled with breathtaking views, quirky stops like Pismo Beach, and a visit to the Elephant Seal rookery in San Simeon. Ojai offered a peaceful escape, with hikes, local shops, and farm-to-table eats, leaving us refreshed and inspired.
Our trip wrapped up at The Lido House in Newport Beach, where we enjoyed luxurious accommodations and incredible seafood at Bear Flag Fish Company. California truly surprised us, rich with varied landscapes, welcoming people, and endless adventures. This journey opened our eyes to the incredible possibilities within the U.S., fueling our desire to explore more stateside treasures.
